India will emerge stronger from South Africa Test series debacle, says Gill

India's loss to South Africa has triggered all-round criticism of the team's performance and team management of head coach Gautam Gambhir.

New Delhi: India’s regular Test skipper Shubman Gill is convinced their series whitewash to South Africa will only make them more united and strengthen resolve for future assignments.

India lost in Kolkata (30 runs) and Guwahati (408 runs) to suffer a series whitewash to reigning World Test Championship winners South Africa.

It was South Africa’s first series victory in India since 2000, and came close on the heels of a 1-1 series draw in Pakistan.

The loss has triggered all-round criticism of the team’s performance and team management of head coach Gautam Gambhir.

"Calm seas don’t teach you how to steer, it’s the storm that forges steady hands. We’ll continue to believe in each other, fight for each other, and move forward - rising stronger," Gill wrote in 'X' on Wednesday.

Gill sat out in Guwahati after with a neck injury, having retired hurt while batting on four during India's first innings of the first Test at Eden Gardens.

He was rushed to a hospital due to neck spasm and ruled out of the rest of the match. Though the top-order batter travelled with the team to Guwahati but was ruled out of the second match and subsequently released from the squad.

Gambhir booed

Angered at India’s meek performance on way to a huge defeat on Wednesday, some visibly agitated supports booed Gambhir at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium.

"Gambhir hai hai, go back," fans shouted from a section of the stands as it reverberated inside the ground.

It caught the attention of Gambhir as he turned towards the agitators and then turn his face away without any reaction.

With decibel levels rising, several players too looked up towards the direction those chants came from.

Seamer Mohammed Siraj then gestured towards the crowd to keep quiet and together with assistant coach Sitanshu Kotak walked towards the gallery to appeal for calmness.

Gambhir is the only coach since 2000 under whom India have lost five Tests at home.
