The ninth edition of the Indian Premier League was held in 2016, which began on April 9 and stretched till May 29 with Sunrisers Hyderabad beating Royal Challengers Bangalore in the final at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore.
LED stumps were used for the first time in the IPL in this season and Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals were absent from the competition after being suspended for two years over a spot-fixing scandal in the 2012 edition.
Their slots were taken up by new franchises Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiants after the Justice RM Lodha committee suspended owners of CSK and Rajasthan for two years for involvement in IPL 2012 spot-fixing case.
CSK and Rajasthan were barred from 2017 and 2017 IPL editions, forcing the BCCI to auction for two teams, with Gujarat and Pune emerging as the two new teams.
It made for eight teams in the competition, with the league stage consisting of 56 matches. The top four teams in the league standings advanced to the play-offs, with the final held in Bangalore on May 29.

Sunrisers Hyderabad edged Royal Challengers by eight runs to be the champions for the first time in what was a fitting final for the tournament.
RCB were set a target of 209 runs and the home team looked like they were in a hurry to win, with Chris Gayle giving them a flying start. But SRH persisted and choked RCB to win by a narrow margin.
Hyderabad won the toss and opted with their skipper David Warner and Ben Cutting playing leading roles with the willow. Warner posted SRH's highest score of 69 while Yuvraj Singh contributed 38.
Cutting scored a whirlwind 39 towards the end to pull the team past the 200-run barrier as Chris Jordan took 3/45 while Sreenath Arvind picked up 2/30.
RCB raced off the blocks during their chase as Gayle blasted 76 and ably supported by Cirat Kohli, who contributed 54. But once they departed, the RCB innings fell apart as Cutting stifled the remaining batters that included AB de Villiers, KL Rahul and Shane Watson.
Apart from Cutting's two wickets that included the prized scalp of Gayle, Barinder Sran, Mustafizur Rahman and Bipul Sharma all claimed a wicket each.
