New Delhi: Ishan Kishan has been appointed as the skipper of Jharkhand for the upcoming Ranji Trophy 2025-26. This will be Kishan's second stint in charge of the Jharkhand side. The left-hand batter was given the responsibility in the last edition as well, after Saurabh Tiwary announced retirement from the state team.
Recently, Kishan played two county games as well for Nottinghamshire and scored two half-centuries in two innings. But he failed to get a place in the Indian squad for the two-match Test series against the West Indies.
The left-hand wicketkeeper batter has played 58 first-class matches and scored 3447 runs at an average of 37.87 with eight centuries and 17 fifties.
Rishabh Pant was ruled out of the Test series due to an injury, and Narayan Jagadeesan was named as his replacement. With the Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper getting a chance over Kishan, it means currently, Kishan is not in the plans of the selectors and is not considered as the third-choice wicket-keeper for India in the red-ball format.
Kishan was once groomed as Pant's backup in Test cricket, but his inconsistent performance and not playing domestic cricket put him on the sidelines from the Test setup and also ruled him out of the India central contract.
Jharkhand squad: Ishan Kishan (c), Virat Singh (vc), Kumar Kushagra (wk), Aryaman Sen, Sharandeep Singh, Kumar Suraj, Anukul Roy, Shikhar Mohan, Manishi, Vikas Kumar, Jatin Kumar Pandey, Vikash Singh, Aditya Singh, Sahil Raj, Shubham Singh, Rishav Raj.
Ajit Agarkar, chief selector, opened up about Ishan Kishan's exclusion, as the selection committee wants more performances from the Jharkhand batter to present his case for the red-ball format.
Kishan missed out on the India A squad due to a fitness issue, but now he will feature in the Irani Trophy. The left-hand batter had two good games in the English county season, but due to an injury, he was ruled out of the squad.
Kishan played his last international game in 2023, and after that, he was excluded from every format setup due to disciplinary issues for skipping domestic cricket.
