Jay Shah meets IOC president Kirsty Coventry, discusses cricket's return to 2028 Olympics

New Delhi: International Cricket Council (ICC) chairman Jay Shah, on Thursday, met the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Kirsty Coventry in Lausanne. This was Shah's second meeting with Coventry this year after meeting the IOC chief in Brisbane earlier in 2025.

Shah continued his discussion over the re-entry of cricket in the Olympic Games in the 2028 edition. The summer Olympics would be held in the month of July three years later with cricket making a comeback into the Olympics after a huge gap of 128 years. Cricket made its only appearance at the multi-nation global event way back in the year 1900 in Paris Games.

After the meeting, Shah took to his social media handle X and said that the meeting with the IOC chief was fruitful as they continued their discussions on the road to LA28 and cricket's return to the Olympics. He further revealed that they discussed about how cricket can play a role in the growth of of the Olympic Games.

'It was a pleasure to meet with IOC President Kirsty Coventry to continue our ongoing discussions on the road to LA28 and Cricket's return to the Olympic Games. We reflected on the progress made so far and the significant role cricket can play in the growth of the Olympic movement,' Shah wrote on his twitter handle.

Cricket has not been a part of the Olympics due to numerous factors which include lack of global popularity, scheduling problems with major cricketing tournament like the T20 World Cup, logistical challenges and political issues within the sport's governing bodies. While this was the scenario for the last 128 years but with positive talks going on for a while, cricket's return to the marquee event is expected.

Meanwhile, the Los Angeles edition will feature a total of six teams, men and women, with hosts USA getting an automatic entry into it being the hosts for the multi-national event.
