New Delhi: Shubman Gill's woes in T20I cricket continued with another flop show as his search for a substantial knock in the shortest format continued after a horror outing in the second T20I vs South Africa at the  Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium, Mullanpur, New Chandigarh.

Yet to find his feet in the shortest format, Gill was eying major gains on home soil, but his misery extended with a golden duck in front of the home crowd. He was dismissed for 4 in the opening match of the series on Tuesday.

Opening the batting with his Punjab teammate Abhishek Sharma, Gill was dismissed for a first-ball duck as Lungi Ngidi handed India a huge blow in the opening over, as the home side got off to the worst possible start in chase of a massive target of 214.

South Africa showed what they are made of after getting embarrassed in the first T20I in Cuttack and posted 212/4 in 20 overs after losing the toss. Quinton de Kock starred with a swashbuckling 46-ball 90 while David Miller and Donavan Ferreira provided a late flourish to give the visitors a strong finish.

Jasprit Bumrah and Arshdeep Singh, India's two top wicket-takers, had a rare off day. Both bowlers, who conceded more than 12 runs an over, were taken to the cleaners by the SA batters.

Gill's flop show continues at home

The true nature of the pitch gave fans hopes of a similar show with the bat from the home side, but the mood turned sombre with Gill's wicket on the fifth ball of the innings. The India Test and ODI captain was caught at first slip after being squared up by an Ngidi outswinger.

Since his T20 comeback in the Asia Cup back in September, Gill's form remains a talking point after failing to pick up at home.

Question marks will be raised on the Indian team management, who disturbed a settled opening partnership between Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma to accommodate Gill, also the vice-captain of the team, as an opener. The batter from Kerala has been displaced, and he has since then struggled to find a place in the playing eleven.
