New Delhi: In a massive boost for the Indian cricket team, vice-captain Shreyas Iyer has been declared fit to play the ODI matches against New Zealand starting on January 11 in Vadodara. Iyer, who was included in the 50-over games by the Indian cricket board on subject to fitness, has been given a fitness clearance certificate by the BCCI CoE, reports Times of India.

This means that the seasoned batter would be participating in the three ODI matches against Kiwis after remaining out of action for nearly three months. While taking a catch in the third and final ODI against Australia at the SCG in October 2025, Iyer suffered a damage to his spleen which barred him from playing cricket in all these months.

Once the cricketer attained fitness, he reported to the BCCI CoE in Bengaluru on December 25 last year and underwent a strict rehabilitation program along with match practice sessions. On attaining full fitness and clearing his match practice session at the BCCI CoE, Iyer participated in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy for Mumbai and scored 82 runs in the game against Himachal Pradesh.

Making a statement return in the premier domestic competition, he now has the green signal to participate for India in the international assignments starting from Sunday. With veterans Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma already featuring in the line-up for India, Iyer's inclusion comes up as a big boost in the batting department for the Men in Blue.

The 31-year-old batter has been a key figure in India's ODI set up but has been facing injury scares since some time due to which his on-field appearance has been limited. Since he returned to form in VHT, he would be aiming continue the same in the 50-over games against the Kiwis.
