Mohammed Shami, Akash Deep included in Bengal's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy squad

New Delhi: Team India fast bowler Mohammed Shami, who took 20 wickets in four first phase matches of the Ranji Trophy 2025-26 , has been included in Bengal's Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy squad, which is set to begin on November 26.

The out-of-favour Shami has played four of Bengal's five Ranji Trophy matches this season, after recovering from leg injury. He picked up 15 wickets in the first two matches, which proved crucial as Bengal registered two back-to-back wins against Uttarakhand and Gujarat at the start of the season. They are currently leading the group C points table.

Shami was included in the squad along with another India fast bowler Akash Deep. Abhimanyu Easwaran will lead the 17-member side in the tournament. It looks like the Indian selectors have moved past the veteran pacer as he was not selected for the white ball tour of Australia and then the ongoing Test series against South Africa.

But, Shami is keen to make a comeback again, and said that his motivation is to stay fit and be available for the India. He further added that it's not his job to update selectors on fitness.

Young wicketkeeper-batter Abhishek Porel is also named in the squad, after he played for India A in the Rising Asia Cup tournament. Shakir Habib Gandhi is the second keeper in the squad.

Bengal are placed in group C along with Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Services, Puducherry and Haryana. They will take on Baroda in their opening match of the T20 tournament in Hyderabad on November 26.
