Former Sri Lankan pacer Chaminda Vaas is one of the finest fast bowlers to have graced the game. He made his international debut for Sri Lanka in 1994 and went on to become one of the vital cogs in their bowling line-up for the next decade and more. Vaas played as many as four ODI World Cups for Sri Lanka and is the country's 3rd most successful bowler in the tournament's history.

Vaas, who troubled the best of batters around the world with his pace, variations and ability to swing the ball viciously, holds the record for the best bowling figures in ODIs. He recorded excellent figures of 8/19 in a game against Zimbabwe in Colombo in 2001 to set the world record for the best-ever bowling figures in ODIs.

Vaas remains the only bowler in the world to have picked up an 8-wicket haul in an ODI match. Vaas is the second-highest wicket-taker for Sri Lanka in ODIs with 399 wickets in 321 matches at an average of 27.45 and an economy rate of 4.18. He is 4th in the list of the highest wicket-takers of all time in ODI history with 400 wickets in 322 matches.

Vaas is only behind legends like Waqar Younis (416), Wasim Akram (502) and Muttiah Muralitharan (534) in the list of the highest wicket-takers of all time in ODIs. He is also the first bowler to have taken a hat-trick in the first over of an ODI match. He achieved the feat against Bangladesh in the 2003 ODI World Cup.

Chaminda Vaas stats in ODI World Cup

Chaminda Vaas is one of the most successful bowlers in ODI World Cup history with 49 wickets in 31 matches at an average of 21.22, including a solitary fifer and a 4-wicket haul. Vaas is Sri Lanka's second-highest wicket-taker of all time in the tournament, behind only the legendary Muttiah Muralitharan, who is on top with 68 wickets from 40 matches.

Vaas played his first ODI World Cup in 1996, where he picked up six wickets in as many matches to play his part in helping Sri Lanka lift the title. Vaas was part of the Sri Lankan squad in the 1999 ODI World Cup as wel,l where his performances improved slightly as he managed 7 wickets in 5 matches with the best figures of 3/46.

Vaas delivered his best-ever performance in the 2003 ODI World Cup, where he wreaked havoc on the opposition batting line-up to finish as the leading wicket-taker with 23 wickets from 10 matches at an average of 14.39, and an economy rate of 3.76, including a fifer and a 4-wicket haul apiece. Vaas played his last World Cup for Sri Lanka in 2007 where his performances dipped slightly.

But the left-arm pacer still finished with 13 wickets in 10 matches at an average of 22 and an economy rate of 3.05. Vaas is currently 8th on the list of highest wicket-takers of all time in ODI World Cup history with 49 wickets to his name.
