New Delhi: Doubts over Indian skipper Shubman Gill's participation in the second Test match against South Africa from Saturday have grown bigger. The Indian cricket team might be bracing for a massive setback as Gill does not look completely fit to take part in the crucial Guwahati Test, which is of pivotal importance to India.

Having gone 0-1 down in the 2-match series after losing the series opener at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, Team India would be looking forward to win the game to secure a draw in the series. Gill suffered a neck injury in the series opener last week and could not bat in the second innings as India failed to chase a 124-run total.

Now as per a report in India Today, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy has been added to the Indian squad for the second Test as a cover for Gill. The Indian captain would be travelling to the city with the squad but is unsure to take part which has paved way for Reddy's participation. The all-rounder has been withdrawn from the ongoing India A series against South Africa A in Rajkot.

Gill's participation depends on his recovery: BCCI

The Indian cricket board also confirmed that the captain will travel to the city and it will depend on his recovery whether or not he will be able to play the second Test against the Proteas. If he does not play the game, he will travel to the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru from Kolkata, as there are no restrictions on flying.

In Reddy's case, the third and final List A match is scheduled for Wednesday. But the Andhra batting all-rounder reached Kolkata on Monday evening and did not take part in the day's net session. With a Test hundred to his name and being a right-hander, Reddy could be in contention for a place in the playing XI at Guwahati.
