New Delhi: Rishabh Pant will lead to India in the second Test against South Africa in Guwahati after regular skipper Shubman Gill was ruled out with a neck sprain.
Gill will travel with the squad to Guwahati and will be monitored by BCCI's medical team but won't be available for selection for the match that begins on Saturday, multiple reports said.
The 26-year-old’s absence suffered a neck injury while batting in the first innings of the first Test in Kolkata.
He neither fielded in South Africa’s second innings nor bat in India’s second innings as the hosts were bowled out for 93 in chase of 124 runs at Eden Gardens.
The right-hander was admitted to a hospital after second day’s play and was discharged the next day.
“Team India captain Shubman Gill suffered a neck injury on Day 2 of the Kolkata Test against South Africa and was taken to the hospital for examination after the end of day’s play.
“He was kept under observation and discharged the next day. Shubman has been responding well to the medical treatment provided and will travel to Guwahati with the team on 19th November, 2025," the BCCI said in a statement on Wednesday.
In Gill's absence, one among left-handed batsmen Sai Sudharsan and Devdutt Padikkal is likely to be included in the playing XI.
India head into the second Test match trailing 1-0 in the two-match series. They had an optional practice session at Eden Gardens on Tuesday, in which Sudharsan, Dhruv Jurel, Akash Deep, Ravindra Jadeja and Padikkal attended.
The Guwahati Test match will begin at 9 am IST, with the tea break taking place before the lunch break for the first time in Test cricket's history, keeping in mind the regional climate demands.
