South Africa endured a heartbreak as Harmanpreet Kaur-led India defeated the Proteas by 52 runs in the final to lift their maiden Women's ODI World Cup title at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on Sunday. Both teams were aiming for their maiden title triumph, and it was the Indian team that came out on top after successfully defending a total of 298 runs in the summit clash.
Playing their first-ever ODI World Cup final across men's and women's cricket, South Africa slumped to a crushing defeat despite a fighting century from captain Laura Wolvaardt in the final. Wolvaardt, who finished as the highest run-getter of the tournament, slammed a brilliant 101, but it was not enough to take South Africa home in the 299-run chase in the final.
Following South Africa's heartbreaking loss, Jemimah and Radha were seen consoling senior Proteas all-rounder Marizanne Kapp at the DY Patil Stadium. Kapp, who was featuring in her fifth ODI World Cup for South Africa, was left distraught after failing to realise her dream of lifting the elusive trophy.
Jemimah and Radha, who are Kapp's teammates at Delhi Capitals (DC) in the Women's Premier League (WPL), were seen comforting the South Africa all-rounder, who was in tears after her side's defeat. The emotional moment between the trio highlighted mutual respect and sporting spirit.
The other Indian players also spoke to their South African counterparts and shared hugs with them after the final, showcasing great mutual respect between the two teams. India's vice-captain, Smriti Mandhana, was seen speaking to South Africa captain Wolvaardt, while Jemimah made sure to congratulate some other Proteas players for their journey to the final.
Marizane Kapp's stellar campaign in Women's ODI World Cup 2025
Kapp, South Africa's senior-most player, enjoyed a stunning campaign in the Women's ODI World Cup 2025 despite her failure in the final. She endured a disappointing day against India in the summit clash on Sunday as she went wicketless with the ball and managed to score just 4 runs during South Africa's run chase.
However, it was a great campaign overall for the veteran all-rounder. She scored 208 runs in 8 innings and picked up 12 wickets to play a key role in helping South Africa reach their maiden ODI World Cup final. Kapp scored a crucial 42-run knock and picked up a sensational fifer in the semi-final to help South Africa thrash England.
With the help of her five-wicket haul, the South Africa all-rounder also surpassed Jhulan Goswami to become the highest wicket-taker in the Women's ODI World Cup history. Kapp has 44 wickets to her name in 31 matches at an economy rate of 4.46 in the Women's ODI World Cup. She has also amassed 659 runs at an average of 28.65 in the tournament.
