Richa Ghosh appointed DSP in West Bengal Police after World Cup heroics

New Delhi: India women's team wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh, on Saturday, was appointed as the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the West Bengal Police for her heroics in the recently-concluded women's World Cup 2025. India beat South Africa by 52 runs in the grand finale in Navi Mumbai on November 2 to lift the title for the maiden time.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally handed over the appointment letter to the Indian player at a felicitation ceremony being organised by Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) at the iconic Eden Gardens cricket stadium in Kolkata. The 22-year-old cricketer was awarded with the prestigious Banga Bushan award by the state government.

In addition, the CAB presented her with a golden bat and ball along with a cash reward of Rs 34 lakh as a tribute to her performance against the Proteas in the final in Navi Mumbai. Ghosh scored 34 runs in the final match lending her part of contribution in India's World Cup triumph. The West Bengal cricketer also gifted her a golden chain, which was handed over by the Chief Minister herself.

CM Banerjee praises Ghosh

During the felicitation ceremony, the CM said that women's cricket pioneers like Jhulan Goswami laid the foundation for India women's cricket and Ghosh ensured that the team finally ends its long wait for an ICC title. She also added that the Indian women's player deserves all the praise and it is important not to put any pressure on her.

The CM further added that she wants to see all the girls on top, giving reference of Bengali girls doing well in other sports like football and archery.

“Richa has just begun her journey. I want our girls to always be on top. Our Bengal girls have done well in football, swimming, and archery. I believe our archers will bring home an Olympic medal. I expect great things from Richa Ghosh, but we will not put any pressure on her,” the CM added.

Richa Ghosh was outstanding throughout India’s World Cup campaign, scoring 235 runs in eight matches at an average of 39.16 and a strike rate of 133.52.
