Senior India batter Rohit Sharma will be looking to break an elite record held by former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi when he takes the field in the upcoming ODI series against Australia. The ODI series against the Aussies will mark Rohit's return in Indian colours after seven months. He was last seen in action for India in the Champions Trophy 2025, where he led the team to glory.

Rohit will not be leading India in the upcoming series against Australia, having been replaced by Shubman Gill as captain in ODIs. The Hitman, who was earlier replaced by Gill as India's Test captain, will now play for India purely as a batter moving ahead. Nonetheless, the senior batter remains a vital cog in India's batting line-up.

Ahead of the three-match ODI series against Australia, which gets underway on Sunday, October 19, Rohit is on the cusp of surpassing Afridi to become the batter with the most sixes in ODI history. Rohit needs only eight more maximums to go past Afridi, who currently holds the record for the most sixes in the format.

Rohit currently has 344 sixes to his name in 265 innings in ODIs, second only to Afridi, who holds the all-time record with 351 sixes in 369 innings. If Rohit manages to hit eight sixes in the upcoming three-match series against Australia, he will become the highest six-getter in ODIs, highlighting his incredible hitting prowess.

Rohit Sharma to play 500th international match in Australia

Rohit, who has played 499 international matches for India across formats, is on the verge of becoming only the fifth Indian to complete 500 matches across formats. Rohit will complete 500 appearances in ODIs if he is part of India's playing XI in the first ODI against Australia in Perth on Sunday, October 19.

Rohit has so far played 67 Tests, 273 ODIs and 159 T20Is in his international career. The 38-year-old made his international debut against Ireland in 2007 and was part of India's 2007 T20 World Cup-winning team under MS Dhoni. Sachin Tendulkar (664), Virat Kohli (550), MS Dhoni (538), and Rahul Dravid (509) are the only other Indians with 500 or more matches under their belt in international cricket.

Rohit is also on the verge of completing a half-century of centuries in his international career. The Hitman has so far smashed 49 tons in his international career and needs one century in Australia to complete 50 hundreds, becoming only the third Indian and the 9th player overall to achieve the feat. Only Virat Kohli (82) and Sachin Tendulkar (100) have scored 50 or more centuries for India.
