New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer has been rushed to a Sydney hospital after suffering internal bleeding following his rib cage injury sustained in India's third ODI against Australia.

The ODI vice-captain ran backwards from backward point to take a diving catch to dismiss Alex Carrey but then writhed in pain as he lay on turf at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

It appeared that he had injured his left rib cage while landing on the ground with the ball in his hand and was taken to a hospital soon afterwards.

"Shreyas has been in Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for the past couple of days. After the reports came in, internal bleeding was detected, and he had to be admitted immediately.

"He will remain under observation for anywhere between two to seven days depending on recovery, as one needed to stop spreading of infection due to bleeding," a BCCI source told PTI.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India's medical team decided to admit the middle-order batter to a hospital after his vital parameters fluctuated when he was stretchered to the dressing room.

"The team doctor and physio didn't take any chances and took him to the hospital immediately. Things are stable now, but it could have been fatal. He’s a tough lad and should be fine soon," the source added.

Iyer was initially expected to be sidelined for around three weeks, but the recovery period might take longer now as he remains in ICU.

"Since there has been internal bleeding, he will certainly need more time to recover, and at this point, it’s difficult to put a definite timeline on his return to competitive cricket," the source said.

"Iyer sustained an impact injury to his left lower rib cage region while fielding during the third ODI against Australia in Sydney on 25th October 2025. He was taken to the hospital for further evaluation," the BCCI said in a statement.

"Scans have revealed a laceration injury to the spleen. He is under treatment, medically stable, and recovering well. The BCCI Medical Team, in consultation with specialists in Sydney and India, is closely monitoring his injury status. The Indian Team Doctor will remain in Sydney with Shreyas to evaluate his day-to-day progress."

The 31-year-old is likely to remain admitted in the Sydney hospital for around a week before he could be declared fit to return to India. He isn't part of India’s T20 squad.
