New Delhi: Shreyas Iyer grabbed the headlines recently after the batter was snubbed from the Asia Cup squad. But, now could captain India A in the upcoming two red-ball matches against Australia A. The Aussies are touring India from September 16 to October 5, which include two unofficial Tests and three unofficial ODI matches.
According to the Cricbuzz report, Iyer is likely to get a prominent role in the squad against Australia A. He was not considered for selection in the 15-member squad for the Asia Cup 2025, which surprised everyone. The middle-order batter has done exceptionally well in the last two years in domestic cricket, but didn't get a ticket for Dubai.
Currently, the right-hand batter is representing the West Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2025. Khaleel Ahmed cleaned him up in the first innings for just 25 runs against Central Zone. If he fails again in the semi-final match, his chances to make a comeback in the Test team might get affected.
Iyer was one of the prominent names to miss out on the selection for the Asia Cup, but after his exclusion, some reports claimed that selectors are seeing him as the future captain of ODIs. This could help him return to the Test side, similar to how Shubman Gill made a comeback in T20Is comeback after being appointed red-ball captain.
After the Asia Cup, the Men in Blue will gear up for a home Test series against West Indies in October, and that will be the perfect opportunity for Iyer to make a return in the team. Apart from Iyer, top-performers from Duleep Trophy, such as N Jagadeesan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Nitish Reddy, Sai Sudarshan, Rajat Patidar, and Abhimanyu Easwaran, will be in contention for the selection.
The series will begin with two four-day games commencing from September 16 in Lucknow, just a day after the Duleep Trophy final. The second four-day game will also be played in Lucknow from September 23 to 26.
After the red-ball games, both sides will be travelling to Kanpur for the three ODI matches on September 30, October 3, and October 5. All three games will be played in Kanpur. The series between India A and Australia A will be have a major impact on the selection for the senior India and Australia series, starting from October 19 in Perth.
