New Delhi: Continuing his stellar run in whites for India, Shubman Gill notched up his 10th Test hundred on Day 2 of the ongoing second Test against West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Saturday. Gill slammed an unbeaten 129 to notch up his fifth Test ton as captain in just 12 innings and help India post a massive total of 518/5 (declared) in their first innings.
With his unbeaten century against the West Indies, Gill equalled Virat Kohli's record for most centuries by an Indian captain in a calendar year in Tests. It was Gill's fifth hundred in Tests since he took over from Rohit Sharma as India's captain in the longest format earlier this year. Gill enjoyed a record-breaking campaign in his first Test series as captain in England, where he amassed a stunning 754 runs in 5 matches, including 4 centuries.
Gill continued his fine form in the ongoing home Test series against West Indies with a brilliant 129 in India's first innings of the 2nd Test on Saturday. Kohli notched up five Test centuries as captain twice in 2017 and 2018, the most by an Indian captain in the longest format. Gill equalled the former captain's feat in Delhi on Saturday.
Virat Kohli (5) - 2017 (16 innings)
Virat Kohli (5) - 2018 (24 innings)
Shubman Gill (5)* - 2025 (12 innings)
Gill's unbeaten 129 off 196 deliveries was laced with 16 fours and 2 sixes. Resuming their first innings from318/2, India lost centurion Yashasvi Jaiswal early in the first session after the left-hander got run out in an unfortunate manner. However, Gill combined with Nitish Redd (43) and Dhruv Jurel (44) to help India reach 518/5 before declaring the innings.
Gill added 91 runs for the 4th wicket with Reddy, who was promoted up the order, before sharing a 102-run stand with Jurel, who also missed out on a well-deserved fifty. Gill's 129 is his highest individual score in a Test match in India, surpassing his 128 against Australia in Ahmedabad in 2023.
India declared their first innings on 518/5 after Jurel's dismissal on 44 in the 135th over. The hosts dominated the proceedings with the bat on the first two days of the Test match after winning the toss and opting to bat first in the 2nd Test against West Indies in Delhi. Jaiswal stole the show on Day 1 with his sensational ton, while Gill led from the front on Day 2.
Centuries from the duo helped India cross the 500-run mark comfortably and post a huge total on the board to put the pressure on West Indies. India followed a similar script in the first Test, where they registered an innings victory and will be hoping to repeat the feat in the 2nd Test in Delhi to clean sweep the series 2-0.
