The Shubman Gill-led Indian One-Day International team, including seasoned batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, reached Perth early on Thursday for a three-match series against Australia, beginning on October 19.
Besides Kohli, Rohit and Gill, KL Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Arshdeep Singh, Harshit Rana, and Nitish Kumar Reddy, along with some members of the support staff, also landed in the Western Australian city after multiple hours of flight delay.
They will be joined later by coach Gautam Gambhir and the rest of the coaching staff later in the day. The second batch of players and coaches boarded an evening flight from Delhi on Wednesday.
The series will begin at the Optus Stadium on Sunday, followed by the second match in Adelaide (October 23), and the final ODI in Sydney (October 25). After the 50-over leg, both teams will face off in a five-match T20 International series starting October 29.
All eyes will be on Rohit and Kohli, who will return to the international fold after six months. The veteran duo, who have retired from both T20Is and Tests, will don the national colours for the first time since India's Champions Trophy triumph in March earlier this year. The Australia series will mark the beginning of a new era under Gill. who has replaced Rohit as India's new ODI skipper.
The change in leadership and the dynamics of the team sparked speculations about the future of one of India's greatest white-ball cricketers. While both are selected for Australia ODIs, it is still unclear whether they are in the team's plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup.
Gill, who now holds leadership positions in Tests and ODIs, has backed both Kohli and Rohit while hailing their experience and skillset.
"The experience that both of them have and the matches that they have won for India, there are very few players who have won so many matches for India... players who have such skills and qualities with this experience are very few," Gill had said after India's Test series win against the West Indies.
"There are very few players in the world who have so much skill, quality and experience. So, in that sense, yes," he added.
