New Delhi: Star pacer Lungi Ngidi has been added to South Africa's squad for the second Test match against India in Guwahati. Kagiso Rabada, who missed the series opener against the hosts at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, is expected to be out of the second Test match as well.
So as it bolster the Proteas squad, the visitors have included the star fast bowler ahead of the crucial Test match. South Africa started off the series with a bang as they notched up a sensational victory denying India a chase of meagre 124 runs. Ngidi will join Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch and Wiaan Mulder as the other pace option for the Temba Bavuma-led team.
Ngidi joined the team at the hotel in Kolkata before their scheduled departure to Guwahati on Wednesday. The fast bowler has played 20 Test matches in his career so far but only three since making a comeback in Cape Town against the Indian side in January 2024. His last appearance in the red-ball cricket was at the World Test Championship final against Australia in June.
He has played just one Test match in India going wicketless in Ranchi in 2019. Ngidi played a game for the Titans in the CSA T20 Challenge. Meanwhile in the Kolkata Test, South Africa bowlers bowled 40 overs and picked up six wickets to clinch first Test win on Indian soil since last 15 years. Proteas had last won a Test in India back in 2010.
While the Kolkata pitch offered huge assistance to the pace bowlers and a bit of spin for the slower bowlers as well, how Guwahati pitch will behave still remains a mystery. The visitors would be aiming at winning the match and series in the next game, India's focus will remain on clinch the game so as to save the Test series.
