New Delhi: South Africa's Matthew Breetzke broke a long-standing record in their second ODI against England at Lord's in London on Thursday.
He scored 85 off 77 balls with the help of seven boundaries and three sixes at a strike rate of 110.39 and broke former India batter Najot Singh Sidhu's mark.
Breetzke became the first batter in ODI history to score five half centuries in a row in his first five knocks, putting him above Sidhu who had scored four consecutive fifties to begin his 50-over career.
In his first five ODI innings, Breetzke has scored 150, 83, 57, 88 and 85, amassing 463 runs to lead the charts for most runs after tfive matches, ahead of Tom Cooper (374), Allan Lumb (328), Sunil Ambris (316) and his SA captain Temba Bavuma (309).
The 26-year-old averages 92.60 and has a strike rate of over 104.51, remarkable figures for a newcomer who made his debut in February.
Breetzke’s five consecutive 50-plus scores in ODIs put him on an elite club as South African greats Jonty Rhodes (2000–01), Quinton de Kock (2017 and again in 2019) and Heinrich Klaasen (2024–25).
England won the toss and opted to bowl and then had to deal with Breetzke’s red-hot form as he put together a 147-run stand with Tristan Stubbs to lift South Africa from 93/3 to 330/8, untill he was dismissed by Jofra Archer in the 40th over.
South Africa won the first ODI by seven wickets to take a 1-0 in the three-match series.
