Vaibhav Suryavanshi continued his impressive run with the willow in India's group-stage clash against Bangladesh in the ongoing ICC U19 World Cup 2026 on Saturday, January 17. Suryavanshi notched up his maiden half-century in the tournament with a brilliant knock of 72 runs against Bangladesh at the Queens Sports Club, Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.
The 14-year-old batting sensation, who has witnessed a meteoric rise in the last few months, didn't get off to an ideal start in the U19 World Cup 2026 as he was dismissed cheaply on 2 runs in India's opener against USA. However, the swashbuckling left-hander bounced back with a stellar knock against Bangladesh on Saturday.
Suryavanshi opened the batting with skipper Ayush Mhatre, who was dismissed cheaply on 6 off 12 balls, before no.3 Vedant Trivedi fell on a duck. India also lost the talented Vihaan Malhotra cheaply on 7 to be reduced to 53/3 inside ten overs. However, Suryavanshi played his natural game and continued his onslaught from one end to smash 72 runs off 67 balls.
His 72-run knock was laced with six fours and three sixes, which helped India navigate through a difficult phase after a top-order collapse. Thanks to his half-century and a fighting 80 off 112 balls from wicket-keeper Abhigyan Kundu, India managed to post 238 runs on the board in 48.4 overs against Bangladesh.
With the help of his half-century, Suryavanshi broke the record of India great Virat Kohli. The 14-year-old went past Kohli in the elite list of batters with the most runs for India in youth ODIs. Suryavanshi now has 1047 runs in 20 youth ODIs for India at an average of 52.35 and a strike rate of over 157, including three centuries and five fifties.
Meanwhile, Kohli scored 978 runs in 28 youth ODIs for India. Suryavanshi now holds the seventh spot in the list of highest run-getters for India in youth ODIs, behind Sarfaraz Khan, Unmukt Chand, Shubman Gill, Tanmay Srivastava, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Vijay Zol.
Most runs for India in youth ODIs:
Vijay Zol - 1404 runs
Yashasvi Jaiswal - 1386 runs
Tanmay Srivastava - 1316 runs
Shubman Gill/Unmukt Chand - 1149 runs
Sarfaraz Khan - 1080 runs
Vaibhav Suryavanshi - 1047* runs
Virat Kohli - 978 runs
Suryavanshi's brilliant 72 and Kundu's valiant 80 helped India post a fighting total of 238 runs on the board after a poor show from the top order against Bangladesh. The likes of skipper Mhatre (6), Trivedi (0) and Malhotra (7) failed to deliver as India found themselves in a spot of bother at one stage in the game.
However, Kundu notched up a gritty half-century and combined with Kanishk Chouhan (28) to add a valuable 54 runs for the sixth wicket to help lift India to 238. India will hope to defend the total to bag their second win in a row and continue their perfect start in the ICC U19 World Cup 2026.
