New Delhi: UAE defeated Oman by 42 runs at the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi, in the Asia Cup 2025 on Monday, September 15. The Asia Cup is now peaking at the right time following the India-Pakistan chaos. Now UAE has joined the party by knocking out Oman, making their last group stage match against Pakistan a virtual knockout match.
Oman won the toss and elected to field first against the UAE on Monday. With sharp line and lengths from Oman bowlers, the UAE openers struggled in the first three overs. But after the midway point of the power play, opener Alishan Sharafu counter-attacked Oman's bowlers.
Sharafu played an aggressive role, while Mohammed Wassem anchored the UAE innings. Sharafu blazed with a quick-fire half-century, and Waseem scored 69 runs off 54 deliveries to guide their side to an above-par score of 172/5 in 20 overs.
For Oman, left-arm pacer Jiten Ramanandi picked up two wickets. Apart from him, no bowler looked lethal in the first innings.
In response, Oman were never in the run chase as they lost four wickets inside the powerplay. UAE bowlers scalped wickets at regular intervals, courtesy of Junaid Siddique's four-fer.
After their big win against Oman, UAE have given a ray of hope to their fans. The home team suffered a humiliating loss against India in their first game, but now UAE can believe that they can qualify for the Super 4 if they manage to beat Pakistan.
India have already qualified for the Super 4s after UAE beat Oman. UAE and Pakistan will face each other in a virtual knock-out game on Wednesday, September 17.
Pakistan have a history of getting stunned by minnows in important matches, just like they were humiliated by the USA in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 and knocked out from the tournament in the group stage as well.
By looking at this inexperienced Pakistan side, the UAE have an outside chance to stun Men in Green.
