Shubman Gill-led India suffered a crushing 30-run defeat in the 1st Test against South Africa at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday, November 16. India suffered a batting collapse in their second innings as the hosts failed to chase down the target of 124 runs to go 1-0 down in the two-match series against the Proteas.

Chasing 124 on a rank turner at the Eden Gardens, India got trapped in their own spin web as they lost wickets at regular intervals to get bundled out for a paltry 93 runs. With Shubman Gill not available to bat due to a neck injury, Washington Sundar top-scored for India with a gritty 32 off 92 balls, but it was not enough to take the hosts home.

Earlier, South Africa rode on an unbeaten 55 from skipper Temba Bavuma to post 153 runs on the board in their second innings and set up a 124-run target for India. Bavuma, who batted with composure and showcased his defensive technique, was the only batter to score a half-century in the game.
