New Delhi: Virat Kohli proved why he's regarded as one of the best batters of all time as he lit up the Raipur cricket stadium with a sensational century during the second ODI against South Africa on Wednesday.
Kohli, who began the ODI series with his 52nd century in the format in Ranchi, seemed unstoppable as he smacked his second consecutive ton in the series and his 53rd overall in the 50-over format. Interestingly, Kohli has scored a hundred in his last three ODI knocks against the Proteas, with two coming in this series and the third one coming at the 2023 ODI World Cup.
This was the former India captain's 84th international hundred across all the formats as the master batter has scored 30 centuries in Tests and also has one century in the shortest format. Earlier, South Africa won the toss and invited India to bat first in the second-last game of the series.
By virtue of this blistering century, Kohli now has 11 different streaks of hundreds in two or more consecutive ODI innings. The next most for any batter is six by South African AB de Villiers. With this riveting hundred, Kohli also has the most 50-plus scores against the South African side in the 50-over format.
This was the star batter's 15th 50-plus score in his 31st innings against the Proteas with Sri Lanka's Kumar Sangakkara (43 innings) and Australia's Ricky Ponting (48 innings) with as many 50-plus scores. However, Kohli could not continue beyond his century as he went back to the pavilion for 102 runs off 93 balls studded with 7 boundaries and 2 sixes.
After India lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Virat Kohli along with Ruturaj Gaikwad did the recovery work for the hosts with a massive 195-run stand. Gaikwad also slammed a scintillating century, his first in the format.
