Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will return to action for India in the upcoming three-match ODI series against South Africa, which gets underway on Sunday, November 30. The senior batters last featured in the ODI series against Australia last month, where they shared a match-winning partnership for India in the third and final ODI in Sydney.

While Rohit finished the series as the highest run-getter with 202 runs in three matches after failing in the first ODI in Perth, Kohli too ended the series on a high with a 74-run knock in the final ODI after twin failures in the first two games. The duo will be hoping to be among the runs in the ODI series against the Proteas.

Kohli and Rohit were among the first few Indian players to reach Ranchi, where India will lock horns with South Africa in the first ODI on Sunday. The duo have been spending time in the nets and will have more responsibility on their shoulders in the absence of ODI skipper Shubman Gill and vice-captain Shreyas Iyer in the series.

In Gill's absence, KL Rahul will be leading India, having been named the stand-in skipper for the South Africa series. Rohit is expected to continue opening, while Kohli will bat at no.3. In Gill's absence, Rohit is expected to open with Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has been waiting in the wings for a long time in ODIs.

Virat Kohli has a superior record compared to Rohit Sharma in ODIs against South Africa. Kohli has so far played 31 matches against the Proteas in the fifty-over format and has an impressive 1504 runs to his name at an average of over 65, including five centuries and 8 fifties.

Kohli is the second-highest run-getter for India against South Africa in ODIs, behind only the legendary Sachin Tendulkar, who scored 2001 runs in 57 matches against the Proteas. Overall, Kohli is in the third spot behind Tendulkar and Jacques Kallis (1535) on the elite list of batters with the most runs in India-South Africa ODIs.

Kohli needs only 32 runs in the upcoming three-match series to surpass Kallis and become the second-highest run-getter in India-South Africa ODI matches.

Rohit, on the other hand, has 806 runs to his name in 26 ODIs against South Africa at an average of 33.58, including three centuries and two fifties. He is currently India's 8th highest run-getter against South Africa in ODIs. Rohit needs another 25 runs in the upcoming series to pip MS Dhoni (830) in the seventh spot.
