Why has Rohit Sharmas name been omitted from Mumbais Vijay Hazare Trophy squad
Mumbai are set to begin their Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign from December 24, with the team placed in Elite Group C.
New Delhi: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced Mumbai's squad for the Vijay Hazare Trophy starting from December 24 but star player Rohit Sharma's name was missing from it. This development comes despite a clear instruction from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for all the players that participating in domestic matches is compulsory.
Earlier, it was also learnt that Rohit was also keen to participate for the domestic games but his name has been omitted from the squad. Apart from Rohit, the names of other key players likes Suryakumar Yadav, Shivam Dube and Yashasvi Jaiswal are also missing from Mumbai's squad. But the MCA has preferred to maintain silence in the matter.
Name omitted because of unavailability
Mumbai's senior selection committee chairman Sanjay Patil has stated that the names of all the players have been cut because of their unavailability. He further said when all these players, including Rohit, are available, they will be accommodated in the Mumbai squad for the domestic competition.
If they currently are not available, it is not the right choice to put them in the squad as it would negate the chance for a young player to play in the tournament. Meanwhile, there is still a chance for Rohit and Jaiswal to represent Mumbai in the competition as the India vs New Zealand series is slated to start on January 11 giving them ample time to take part in the domestic competition.
While Rohit has been enjoying his time since an impressive outing in the ODI series against South Africa, Jaiswal has been recovering from an acute stomach infection for which he was also hospitalised for two days. Mumbai are set to begin their Vijay Hazare Trophy campaign from December 24, with the team placed in Elite Group C. All their group-stage matches will be played in Jaipur, and the side will be led by experienced all-rounder Shardul Thakur.
