New Delhi: Virat Kohli says his method to prepare for matches is relatively simple and it hinges more on getting in tune mentally rather than being intensely physical.
Since he plays in only one format of international cricket, the former skipper gets breaks in between matches and on his return, smashed his 83rd international hundred in India’s 17-run win over South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday.
His 52nd ODI ton is the most in 50-over format as he sparkled with 135 off 120 deliveries in the first match of a three-game series that India now lead 1-0.
Speaking after his lack of game time after his player-of the-match performance, Kohli said as long as his mind is ready, he could deliver.
"I have never been a believer of a lot of preparation. All my cricket has been mental. I work physically very hard, as long as my fitness levels are up and I am feeling well, it's good," he said.
To keep himself sharp, the BCCI selectors want him to play in domestic matches, including the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy.
"I've played 300-odd ODI games and so much cricket, if you're in touch with the game and are able to hit balls in the practice, if you bat for an hour or two in the nets, you know you're good.
"If you're out of form, you want to play more in the nets. Other than that, it's about being mentally ready and enjoying the game," he said.
‘Enjoy the game’
Now residing in London, Kohli landed in Ranchi two days before the match and begun training before the other Indian players assembled and pointed out that in sunset days of his career it is essential to feel the joy of playing rather than anything else.
“I wanted to get hold of the conditions in Ranchi. I visualise the game a lot, when I think about the game, if I see myself being intense and sharp, I know I can relax and play out there. I am 37, so, I also need to take care of my body," Kohli added.
"Today was really nice to get into the game like that. Pitch played decently for 20-25 overs before slowing down. I just wanted to play the ball and enjoy the game of cricket.
“It was about being in a space of enjoyment. And when you get a start, then the experience kicks in and you're able to build an innings.”
