New Delhi: Australia's under-19 batter Will Malajczuk smashed the fastest century in the history of the under-19 World Cup as the Aussie side raced to a 8 wicket victory over Japan in a game on Tuesday. Malajczuk, who played a splashing innings, struck the quickest hundred un just 51 balls, to steer Australia to a convincing win.
Chasing a score of 202 runs, the opening batter scored half of the runs scored by his innings with a stunning 102 runs off just 55 balls to set the under-19 World Cup stage on fire. By virtue of his lethal knock, Australia registered the second win of its title defence at the marquee competition, along with a place in the Super Sixes.
Malajczuk broke the record of Pakistan player Qasim Akram who had struck a hundred in 62 balls in a under-19 T20 World Cup match against Sri Lanka back in 2022. Indian player Raj Bawa holds the record for the third quickest hundred in the history of under-19 cricket, having hit a century in 69 balls against Uganda in 2022.
Earlier, Japan won the toss and elected to bat first with the side scoring 201 for 8 in the stipulated 50 overs. Hugo Tani-Kelly and Nihar Parmar added 58 runs for the second wicket before the latter was run out for 33 but Kelly went onto play an unbeaten knock of 79 runs to push the overall score above the 200-run mark.
None of the batters part from these two were able to contribute in the innings for the Japan side. For the Aussies, Naden Cooray picked up three wickets while Will Byrom claimed two wickets to push Japan against the wall.
During the chase, Malajczuk, who smashed 102 runs off 55 balls including 12 boundaries and 5 sixes, stole the entire limelight in the game. Apart from his dashing innings, Nitish Samuel played an unbeaten knock of 60 runs to help the Australian side complete the chase in just 29.1 overs. Japan failed to do much with the ball.
