New Delhi: The ODI squad for the New Zealand series is likely to be picked on Saturday or Sunday with all eyes on the inclusion of veteran pacer Mohammed Shami. Shami has not been a part of Team India's international assignments for a long time and with the pacer proving his fitness and performance in domestic cricket, his inclusion becomes the talk of the town.
As per a report in NDTV, the right-arm veteran pacer's domestic performances are being closely monitored by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and after being ignored for a very long time, he has proven himself to be picked for India's international assignments. The report further mentions that Shami has been discussed among the BCCI selection committee on a regular basis and has not been ruled out completely.
The only concern behind the veteran pacer not getting picked is his fitness, which has been described by the BCCI. An Indian cricket board source has been quoted as saying that there is a possibility that he might be picked for the New Zealand ODI series which commences from January 11.
Shami has been delivering at his best in the domestic cricket, proving his fitness by bowling consistently and also claiming wickets and proving his calibre which has been ignored by the Indian cricket board for a long time.
Recently, chief selector Ajit Agarkar also emphasised on the domestic performance of the players saying that if players like Shami are fit enough, they can be considered. Not closing on the possibility of his inclusion, he said that he can surely be considered if he proves himself. Shami has been in decent touch with the ball and has been picking wickets consistently. He has taken 17 wickets in his last six matches (three Vijay Hazare Trophy games and three in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy).
