Duplantis, McLaughlin-Levrone crowned world athletes of the year after record-breaking 2025

Armand Duplantis and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone enjoyed a prolific year that included several record-breaking performances.

New Delhi: Swedish pole vault icon Armand Duplantis and legendary American runner Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone were crowned World Athletes of the Year at the World Athletics Awards ceremony in Monaco. Duplantis was awarded the top prize for an extraordinary year, during which he broke four world records, including the remarkable feat at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

The Swedish ace, who sensationally remained unbeaten in 16 competitions in the year, became the first human to clear the 6.30m barrier at the Tokyo World Championship and claimed the 14th world record and third world title.

His extraordinary achievements in 2025 included world titles both indoors and outdoors, as well as the fifth successive Diamond League Crown.

Duplantis eyes more glory

"I hope to keep pushing it. I hope to keep irritating everyone who has to vote for me for years to come," Duplantis said, winning the award in a glittering ceremony at Monaco.

"It's really important for me to win this for the field eventers. It's very special, I'm going to really cherish this one."

McLaughlin-Levrone also enjoyed a superb year, going undefeated through 2025 in both the 400m and 400m hurdles.

The American sprinter became 400m world champion in Tokyo, clocking 47.78 seconds - the second fastest time in history - to shatter the 42-year-old championship record.

Courtesy of the sensational run in Tokyo, the 26-year-old became the first athlete to ever win world titles in both the 400m flat and 400m hurdles.

She was also part of the U.S. 4x400m relay team that won the gold medal at the World Championships.

"Wow, I'm honestly blown away to win this. Thank you so much, World Athletics, for this honour and recognition," McLaughlin-Levrone said.

"The culmination of the season in Tokyo was a really special moment. For me, 2025 was a year of stepping outside of the comfort zone and pushing the bounds of what was mentally and physically possible."

Duplantis and McLaughlin-Levrone also claimed the athlete-of-the-year awards for men's field and women's track, respectively
