New Delhi: The year 2025, is coming to a close now. The month of December has already started and now in just 30 more days, the world will enter into a new year, 2026. It's time to look at some of the biggest news events of this year, both in India and abroad.
1. Donald Trump takes over as President: The year began with a new leader taking over as President of US. Republican Party leader Donald Trump made a return to the White House in Washington DC, defeating incumbent Joe Biden. He took oath on January 20 as the 47th President of the country.
2. Maha Kumbh Mela and stampede: The year saw the city of Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh hosting the Maha Kumbh Mela. The 45-day long fair began on January 13, 2025. Less than 15 days later, January 29 a major stampede was reported from the Maha Kumbh mela. This occurred during the Mauni Amavasya bathing day, considered to be one of thee most auspicious days to take a dip in the holy river. The government put the official death count at 30 due to the stampede.
3. New Delhi Railway station stampede: In February 2025, a major stampede occurred at the New Delhi Railway station. On February 15, at least 18 people died and several others were injured when large crowds gathered at the station to catch trains headed to Prayagraj, where the Maha Kumbh mela was on. According to a preliminary investigation, some confusion regarding the change in platforms of the trains headed to Prayagraj led people to start running to change platforms and this caused the stampede.
4. BJP wins elections in Delhi and Bihar: elections were held in Delhi on February 5,2025 to elect all 70 members to the Legislative Assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) managed to oust the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) from power after 10 years, in these elections. The party won 48 out of the 70 seats and its leader Rekha Gupta became the new Chief Minister of Delhi.
The BJP also won the Assembly Elections in Bihar. The party fought the November election in coalition with long-time ally, the Janata Dal (United) and performed exceptionally well. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by the BJP won 202 seats and Nitish Kumar of the JD(U) returned as the CM of the state.
5. Pahalgam terror attack: A major terrorist attack took place in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir on April 22. Gunmen opened fire at tourists in the Baisaran Valley, killing 26 people. Of the people killed in the heinous attack, 25 were Indian nationals, while 1 person was from Nepal. The Indian government blamed the attack on Pakistan and vowed to take revenge.
6. Operation Sindoor: India launched Operation Sindoor, a military operation targeting terrorists in neighbouring Pakistan in May 2025. The operation was India's response to the Pahalgam attack, which had left 26 people dead. The Operation was launched on May 7,2025. This was described as a calibrated, tri-services response that embodied precision, professionalism, and purpose.This was conceived as a punitive and targeted campaign to dismantle the terror infrastructure across the Line of Control and deeper inside Pakistan.
7. World gets new Pope: On May 7-8, 2025, cardinals met to elect a new pope. They chose Robert Francis Prevost as Pope Francis's successor. He took the name Pope Leo XIV and became the first Pope from North America. He is also the first Pope to be chosen from the Order of Saint Augustine.
8. Cloudburst in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand: A major natural calamity occurred in 2 hill states of Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand. Both of these states saw major cloudburst incidents during the monsoon season of August and September 2025. Several casualties were reported due to the cloudburst in both of these states. While one cloudburst happened in Dehradun in Uttarakhand, another happened in Uttarkashi. In Himachal Pradesh Mandi was hit with a cloudburst in July and September 2025.
9. Nepal Gen-Z protest: Gen Z protestors took to the streets in Nepal in September 2025, when the country's government banned major social media platforms. The protests were initially peaceful, but soon they turned violent and led to the death of at least 19 people, and left 400 others injured. The protestors finally managed to oust the KP Sharma Oli-led government and installed the country's former Supreme Court chief justice Sushila Karki as the interim Prime Minister.
10. Delhi blast: On November 10, 2025, a bomb blast happened right outside the Lal Quila Metro station in New Delhi. The blast killed 13 people and left several others injured. The blast happened just days after the Delhi Police seized over 200 kgs of explosives from neighbouring Faridabad in Haryana. One terrorist identified as Dr Umar un Nabi was killed in the blast. He was reportedly a suicide bomber and was driving the car which burst into flames outside th Red Fort metro station in North Delhi.
