New Delhi: The year 2025 witnessed a major political development from across the globe. Whether it was an increase in tensions between India and Pakistan, the death penalty to former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the Nepal uprising or efforts to end tensions in the Middle East or Russia and Ukraine, there has been a massive political turnaround from across the globe.
While Donald Trump’s return to the White House has been a surprise to many, his efforts to end tensions in the Middle East and the Russia-Ukraine war have been noticed globally.
Nepal protest: The year saw massive protests in Nepal. The Gen Y in the country expressed their anger against the government, which led to the downfall of the government under then Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. While the protests started over the government’s decision to shut internet, the youth also vented their anger over rising unemployment in the country. After several political leaders were arrested, some were even attacked by the mob. Oli was soon replaced by Sushila Karki as PM.
Downfall of Sheikh Hasina: Apart from Oli in Nepal, the year also saw the downfall of the Sheikh Hasina Government in Bangladesh. As the protesters increased their stir, Sheikh Hasina was forced to resign as Prime Minister and flee India. Recently, a Bangladeshi court awarded her a death sentence in absentia.
Killings of several Hezbollah and Hamas leaders: As the war continues in the Middle East, Israel continues with their military offensive against Hamas and Hezbollah groups. The last one to be killed by Israel was Hezbollah’s top military official Haytham Ali Tabtabai, last month. Hamas Leader Mohammed Sinwar was also killed by Hamas this year.
Israel-Hamas truce efforts: After the intervention of US President Donald Trump, both Hamas and Israel agreed to stop war and swap prisoners. While several prisoners have been exchanged, Israel has not stopped targeting the Gaza Strip.
Russia-Ukraine war: Perhaps one of the longest wars in the history of mankind, billions of people have been killed, and thousands of weapons and missiles have been used by both sides in the war, making civilians the unfortunate prey. In recent times, Trump has tried several steps, including sanctions threats, to stop the war. He even held separate meetings with Russia and Ukraine leaders but has been unsuccessful so far. The war continues.
