Showdown in House over SIR as Opposition raises slogans | Key Developments from Parliament

The current session of the Parliament will go on till December 19. While several bills are expected to be tabled in the Parliament today, SIR is expected to remain as the top focus this session.

New Delhi: The winter session of the Parliament began today amid the Opposition's anger against the BJP-led government over the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) on electoral rolls by the Election Commission in 12 states and Union Territories.

The current session of the Parliament will go on till December 19. While several bills are expected to be tabled in the Parliament today, SIR is expected to remain as the top focus this session. While the Opposition wanted the government to roll it back, the government maintained that it had no role to play as it was the prerogative of the EC.

The Lok Sabha witnesses uproar over the issue on the first day of the session. Even as the proceedings were going on, the Opposition leaders were seen shouting slogans against the government. They were demanding a discussion on the SIR. As is the custom, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke to the media outside the Parliament building ahead of the session and said that the zeal and enthusiasm of India’s democracy have been witnessed time and again.

• The Congress hit back at PM Modi, calling him the "biggest dramabaaz" after accusing the opposition of indulging in drama in Parliament. "On the first day of the Winter Session, instead of addressing the key issues before Parliament, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has once again delivered his 'dramabazi delivery," Kharge wrote on X.
