Jamil brings back Chhetri, includes nine U-23 players among 30 probables

New Delhi: Sunil Chhetri and nine players from the U-23 national team were named among India's preliminary list of 30 probables for AFC Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore.

India travel to Singapore for their away qualifier on October 9 and then host them five days later in Margao, Goa, in what would be new head coach Kalid Jamil's first competitive games in charge.

India finished third among eight teams in the CAFA Nations Cup in Jamil's first campaign in charge and to prepare for the Singapore qualifiers, he brought back talismanic striker Chhetri, who remains the goal-shy country's best best scorer by a country mile, with 95 goals in 154 international matches.

Irfan Yadwad, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Manvir Singh (Jr), Ashique Kuruniyan and Vikram Pratap Singh, who were all tried in four CAFA Nations Cup games upfront in the absence of the rested Chhetri, were all called up.

U-23 players called up

Nine players from India's impressive U-23 AFC Asian Cup campaign in Qatar were called up for the preparatory camp that will begin in Bengaluru on September 20.

Bikash Yumnam, Pramveer, Ricky Meetei, Macarton Louis Nickson, Mohammed Aimen, Vibin Mohanan, Mohammed Sanan K, Muhammed Suhail & Parthib Gogoi were the players included in the senior team camp.

The players will report to the camp a day prior with those picked from Mohun Bagan SG and FC Goa joining after their AFC Champions League 2 engagements.

Five players – two from the U-23 team and three senior players - were kept on standby, whose identities will be announced later, the All Indian Football Federation said in a statement.

The 30-member probables squad:

Goalkeepers: Amrinder Singh, Gurmeet Singh, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu.

Defenders: Anwar Ali, Bikash Yumnam, Chinglensana Singh Konsham, Hmingthanmawia Ralte, Muhammed Uvais, Pramveer, Rahul Bheke, Ricky Meetei Haobam, Roshan Singh Naorem.

Midfielders: Ashique Kuruniyan, Danish Farooq Bhat, Jeakson Singh Thounaojam, Jithin MS, Macarton Louis Nickson, Mahesh Singh Naorem, Mohammed Aimen, Nikhil Prabhu, Suresh Singh Wangjam, Vibin Mohanan.

Forwards: Irfan Yadwad, Lallianzuala Chhangte, Manvir Singh (jr), Mohammed Sanan K, Muhammed Suhail, Parthib Gogoi, Sunil Chhetri, Vikram Partap Singh.

Head Coach: Khalid Jamil.
