India set to formally get hosting rights for 2030 Commonwealth Games this week
India is set to formally receive the hosting rights for the 2030 Commonwealth Games at the Commonwealth Sport's general assembly in Glasgow on Wednesday.
India's bid to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games is all set to be approved formally at the Commonwealth Sport's general assembly in Glasgow on Wednesday, November 26. India are all but confirmed as the hosts for the showpiece event after a recommendation for the Commonwealth Sports Board, however, the final seal of approval is set to come this week.
Ahmedabad has been selected as the host city for the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The city has witnessed a remarkable transformation in terms of sporting infrastructure over the last few years, underlining the Indian government's ambitions to bring the Olympics to the city in the future.
Hosting the 2030 Commonwealth Games also marks a huge step in the right direction in the government's push to make India a global sporting powerhouse. India last hosted the Commonwealth Games in Delhi in 2010. India, hosting the Games, will further strengthen their proposal to host the 2036 Olympics, which has also been proposed to be staged in Ahmedabad.
India faced competition from Nigeria for the 2030 Commonwealth Games hosting rights. Nigerian had proposed city of Abuja as a contender to host the event, however, India earned the recommendation from the Commonwealth Sports Board following an evaluation process by the Evaluation Committee of the board.
The committee compared both cities on multiple parameters, including infrastructure, governance, athlete experience and technical delivery among others. While Ahmedabad was selected as the host for the 2030 edition of the Commonwealth Games, Abuja was recommended for the 2034 edition of the competition.
The final decision on the host for the Commonwealth Games will be taken in the assembly on Wednesday after a presentation from India. Indian Olympic Association (IOA) president PT Usha, and Harsh Sanghavi, Gujarat's sports minister, will represent India alongside a few others Commonwealth Sport's general assembly in Glasgow.
