Satwik-Chirag, Lakshya march into Hong Kong Open quarter-finals

New Delhi: Eighth seed men's doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty entered the quarter-finals of the Hong Kong Open Super 500 badminton tournament on Thursday. 

The former world number one duo defeated Thailand's Peeratchai Sukphun and Pakkapon Teeraratsakul 18-21 21-15 21-11, taking 63 minutes to win against the unseeded pair.

In men's singles, Lakshya Sen reached the quarter-finals as he beat compatriot HS Prannoy 15-21 21-18 21-10 in the second round to set up a date with Japan's Kodai Naraoka or Ayush Shetty.

Sen had notched up a 22-20, 16-21, 21-15 win against Wang Tzu-wei of Chinese Taipei in an hour and 13 minutes in the first round.

Ranked ninth in the world, Satwik-Chirag got off to a slow start as they were behind 8-11 in the opening game but fought back to level at 18 each.

But the Thai duo took the next three points to claim the first game, but intense rallies continued as points were shared till 7-7 after which Satwik-Chirag went ahead 11-10 and pulled ahead from then on.

Once Satwik-Chirag raced ahead 7-2 in the deciding game, there was not stopping them as the gap increased steadily.

Sindhu exits early

On Wednesday, two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu crashed out in the opening round to Denmark’s Line Christophersen 21-15, 16-21, 19-21.

It was the former world champion's first loss to the European Championships silver medallist in six meetings and her sixth exit in the opening round of BWF tournaments this year.

Anupama Upadhyaya was also out of the women’s singles after she went down to fourth seed Tomoka Miyazaki of Japan 17-21, 22-20, 14-21.

Kiran George won 21-16, 21-11 against Singapore’s Jason Teh while advanced with a 15-21, 21-19, 21-13 win over Chinese Taipei’s Su Li-yang.

In women’s doubles, Panda sisters — Rutaparna and Swetaparna — lost 17-21, 9-21 defeat to Hong Kong’s Oi Ki Vanessa Pang and Sum Yau Wong.

Mixed doubles pair of Dhruv Kapil and Tanisha Crasto crashed to a 16-21, 11-21 loss to Chinese Taipei’s Chen Cheng Kuan and Hsu Yin-Hui.
