New Delhi: India's Toman Kumar defeated compatriot Rakesh Kumar to clinch the gold medal in the compound men's open final at the World Archery Para Championships in Gwangju, Korea, on Saturday, September 27.
He was crowned the champion after Rakesh suffered an equipment malfunction, which forced him to pull out from the competition after four shots and settle for a silver medal. He withdrew from the final due to a pulley issue with his bow, allowing Toman, making his world championship debut, to clinch the title with four perfect arrows.
Earlier, Toman beat Shyam Sunder Swami 144-143 in the semifinal to qualify for the summit clash against Rakesh, who beat Britain’s Nathan McQueen 147-143.
Sheetal clinched two medals for India in Individual events by winning the women's compound final against current World and Paralympic champion Türkiye's Oznur Cure Girdi. This was her second consecutive final, but she avenged her 2023 defeat by beating the same opponent in a rather comfortable manner.
She looked in great touch throughout the final, which put a lot of pressure on Oznur, who fumbled in between and dropped regular points, making it easy for Sheetal. With this, Sheetal also became the first Indian to win three medals from the same edition of the World Archery Para Championships.
Earlier in the day, she teamed up with defending mixed team world champion Sarita to win India's first-ever silver medal from the women's compound open doubles category. The duo faced a defeat to Türkiye in the final, with two back-to-back arrows landing in the 8-ring during the last set of an otherwise closely contested clash.
