Yashasvi Jaiswal on cusp of breaking Rahul Dravid's 26-year-old record in 2nd Test against England

Team India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal is on the cusp of shattering a 26-year-old Test record held jointly by former India batters Rahul Dravid and Virender Sehwag. Jaiswal has been in impressive form for India in Test cricket and has been one of the most consistent performers in the whites ever since making his debut in the longest format in 2023.

Jaiswal is on the verge of becoming the fastest Indian batter to complete 2,000 runs in Test cricket. He will be looking to achieve the major milestone in India's first innings of the upcoming 2nd Test against England at Edgbaston in Birmingham. The prolific left-hander needs only 97 runs to complete 2,000 runs in Test cricket for India.

Dravid and Sehwag jointly hold the record for being the fastest Indians to reach 2,000 runs in Test cricket. Both batters reached the landmark in 40 innings. While Dravid achieved the feat in the Hamilton Test against New Zealand in 1999, Sehwag completed 2,000 runs during India's Test match against Australia in Chennai in 2004.

Jaiswal, who made his Test debut in July 2023, currently has 1903 runs in 38 innings at an impressive average of 52.86. The opening batter needs to score 97 runs in India's first innings of the 2nd Test against England to break Dravid and Sehwag's record for the fastest Indian to complete 2,000 runs in Tests. If Jaiswal manages to get to the 2000-run mark in India's second innings at Edgbaston, he will jointly hold the record with Sehwag and Dravid.

Jaiswal has been in fine form for India in Test cricket. The left-hander top-scored for India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against Australia with 391 runs in five Tests and slammed an impressive century on his Test debut in England. Playing his first Test match on English soil, Jaiswal slammed a brilliant knock of 101 against the hosts in 1st Test at Headingley in Leeds.

However, he failed to replicate his heroics with the bat in India's second innings as he could only manage 4 runs off 11 balls. While he has been in excellent form with the bat, Jaiswal will be hoping to improve his fielding in the 2nd Test against England at Edgbaston. 

The youngster dropped multiple catches across England's two innings in the first Test in Leeds, which cost India heavily as the visitors lost the match by five wickets. Jaiswal will be looking to avoid a repeat of his mistakes in the 2nd Test which gets underway on Wednesday, July 02.
