New Delhi: Gamescom 2025 kicked off in Cologne with its traditional Opening Night Live show, and the first day was packed with reveals, trailers, and some surprise sequels. Hosted by Geoff Keighley, the two-hour showcase laid out what gamers can expect over the next year and beyond, touching everything from RPGs to shooters and even anime adaptations.

The pace of announcements was relentless. Long-rumoured sequels were finally confirmed, unexpected new IPs surfaced, and fan-favourite franchises came back with bold new entries. For many players, it was the kind of event where your wishlist keeps getting longer by the minute.

Call of Duty, Lords of the Fallen 2, and more sequels revealed

The biggest spotlight went to Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, which locked in its release date for November 14, 2025. More than just a date, Activision confirmed a new four-player co-op campaign and an endgame mode that gives players extra challenges beyond the story. Multiplayer and zombies also got a preview, with Dead Ops returning for fans who like the arcade-style chaos.

Another surprise was Lords of the Fallen 2, announced barely two years after the first game. Set a century later, the sequel promises a darker world with more freedom between realms and full campaign co-op. Fans of the soulslike genre now have another punishing experience to look forward to.

And then there was LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, due in 2026. A larger, more open Gotham was shown, with expanded combat and traversal, keeping the signature LEGO humour intact.

Expansions and updates to iconic franchises

Blizzard confirmed World of Warcraft: Midnight, the game’s eleventh expansion. It takes players to Quel’thalas to defend the Sunwell and introduces long-awaited player housing, the Haranir allied race, and new Demon Hunter options. At launch, there will be three raids and eight dungeons, keeping MMO players busy well into 2026.

On the adaptation side, Sekiro: No Defeat, an anime take on FromSoftware’s classic, was revealed for Crunchyroll in 2026. With the original voice cast returning, fans expect the same intensity the game delivered but in animated form.

Fallout Season 2 was also given a firm release date, December 17, 2025, and a teaser hinting at New Vegas as a setting. A Deathclaw cameo closed the trailer, ensuring the hype remains strong.

Black Myth sequel and other fresh surprises

After the success of Black Myth: Wukong, Game Science teased its next project, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, based on the folklore demon vanquisher. The teaser showed the same mix of stunning visuals and mythological combat that made Wukong a global hit.

Plenty of DLC and updates were also lined up:

  • Kingdom Come Deliverance 2: Legacy of the Forge (September 9, 2025)
  • Indiana Jones and the Great Circle: Order of Giants (September 4, 2025)
  • World of Tanks 2.0 (September 3, 2025)
  • Cult of the Lamb: Woolhaven (2026)

A night of sequels, returns, and experiments

The general theme of Gamescom 2025’s first day was clear: sequels dominated. From Resident Evil Requiem, which promises a grim new story when it lands in February 2026, to The Outer Worlds 2, arriving October 29, 2025, the industry is doubling down on known hits.

That doesn’t mean there wasn’t room for experimentation. Indie titles like Death by Scrolling, a rogue-like with auto-scrolling chaos, caught attention for its unique concept. And the showcase even highlighted live performances, like the music from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, blending game trailers with stage drama.

What comes next

Day one has already delivered a huge stack of announcements, but Gamescom 2025 isn’t done yet. More trailers, more gameplay, and possibly a few more surprise reveals are expected as the convention continues in Cologne.

For now, the bar has been set high, and players everywhere are busy circling dates on their calendars.
