New Delhi: OpenAI’s annual developer conference has once again become the talk of the tech world. The company revealed new models, fresh developer tools, hardware hints, and a peek at how it sees the future of artificial intelligence. Sam Altman shared the stage with some familiar names, including former Apple design chief Jony Ive, giving the event a mix of product updates and big picture vision.
The announcements stretched from API-ready models like GPT-5 Pro and Sora 2 to new software kits designed to make it easier for developers to build apps with AI at the core. Alongside this, OpenAI also disclosed a partnership with AMD for compute expansion and showed off usage numbers that underline its rapid growth.
One of the headline moments came when Altman introduced GPT-5 Pro, calling it a more advanced reasoning model available via API. A lighter, real-time option named gpt-realtime-mini was also unveiled, aiming to handle faster and cheaper interactions.
The video generation model Sora 2 made its debut too. The upgrade now brings synchronized audio and realistic soundscapes, allowing developers to generate multimedia content that feels richer. In the final ten minutes of the keynote, OpenAI also slipped in gpt-image-1-mini, an image model designed for speed and cost savings.
Developers were at the center of this DevDay. A new offering called AgentKit was showcased, described as a stack for building agentic workflows. It includes a visual Agent Builder, ChatKit for embedding chat into apps, and a Connector Registry that links services like Google Drive, Teams, and SharePoint.
Another highlight was App SDK, which lets apps like Canva or Spotify integrate directly with ChatGPT. Alongside this, ChatKit was positioned as “Stripe Checkout for conversational AI,” handling streaming and embedding chat widgets with minimal friction.
On top of that, OpenAI introduced Codex SDK for embedding its coding agent in other tools. Slack integration was also announced, letting teams summon @Codex in channels and threads to handle tasks.
Altman and Greg Brockman admitted that compute capacity is still a major bottleneck, even with expansion plans. To address this, they announced a multi-year partnership with AMD to scale infrastructure.
The hardware angle came through a rare appearance from Jony Ive, Apple’s former design chief. Ive spoke about designing technology that helps people “feel happier, more peaceful, and less disconnected.” He also reflected on the “extraordinary” pace of AI progress, admitting it often makes it hard to keep focus.
Another major part of the event was the reintroduction of ChatGPT apps. OpenAI is now leaning on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), which has momentum in the developer community. Apps like Booking.com, Coursera, Spotify, and Zillow were shown as early partners.
The apps work as conversational interfaces that can surface within chats, show maps, playlists, or mockups, and connect to backend services. The goal, as Altman said, is to make the API “the primary way people interact with AI.”
Altman revealed that ChatGPT now has 800 million weekly users and over 4 million developers building on the platform. The API is processing an estimated 8 billion tokens per minute. The scale impressed the audience, with stocks of companies like Figma, HubSpot, and Coursera rising after being highlighted as integration partners.
Altman ended the keynote with a reminder of the company’s priorities. “Our main focus is expansion and innovation over profitability,” he said, hinting that growth remains the guiding principle.
For those watching, OpenAI DevDay 2025 showed not only new models and products but also how the company sees its place in the larger technology ecosystem. From no-code agent builders to bold hardware collaborations, it was a mix of tools for today and bets for tomorrow.
