Raj & Uddhav Unite Over Marathi Pride | MNS Slapgate Sparks Political Storm |

| Updated on: Jul 09, 2025 | 07:51 AM

The recent "slapgate" incident in Mira Road, Maharashtra, has escalated into a significant political crisis, highlighting simmering tensions surrounding the Marathi language and identity. The incident involved MNS (Maharashtra Navnirman Sena) workers assaulting a shopkeeper for allegedly refusing to speak Marathi, sparking widespread outrage after the video went viral. This event unexpectedly brought together Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray, previously bitter political rivals, in a united front against the BJP.

Both Thackeray cousins accused the BJP of attempting to impose Hindi and suppress Marathi culture within Maharashtra. This accusation further intensified existing regional linguistic tensions. The MNS launched significant protests across Mumbai, leading to arrests, police intervention, and fiery confrontations. The scale and intensity of these protests underscore the depth of feeling surrounding the issue.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis issued a warning against hooliganism and violence, while BJP MP Nishikant Dubey launched a scathing attack on both Thackeray cousins, describing their actions as cheap politics and suggesting their approach would be less successful outside of Maharashtra. This counter-attack from the BJP only escalated the conflict further.

Adding another layer of complexity, Eknath Shindes minister, Pratap Sarnaik, participated in an MNS rally, creating a public rift within the ruling alliance and potentially weakening their position ahead of upcoming elections. Uddhav Thackeray sought to clarify his stance, asserting that his opposition is focused on the forceful imposition of any language, not Hindi itself. He pointed out his own use of Hindi in Parliament, highlighting the complexities of the debate.

The timing of the "slapgate" incident, coinciding with the upcoming BMC (Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation) elections, is significant. The controversy surrounding Marathi pride has become a major electoral issue, likely influencing voters and shaping the political landscape in the state. The clash between regional identity and national unity continues to define the political climate in Maharashtra.
