New Delhi: A 20-year-old Indian student was shot dead in Canada's Toronto. The student, identified as Shivank Avashi, was killed near the University of Toronto's Scarborough campus, and his body was found with bullet injuries on Tuesday. Avashia was a doctoral student.
"On Tuesday, at approximately 3:34 pm, police responded to a call for an unknown trouble in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road area. Officers responded to reports of a person with serious injuries. Officers located a male victim with a gunshot wound. The victim was pronounced deceased on scene," the police said in an official statement on Wednesday.
Authorities said that the suspect or suspects managed to flee the spot before police arrival. "The suspect(s) fled the area prior to police arrival," the statement said. The police said the incident was Toronto's 41st homicide case this year.
Police seeks public's help to nab accused
The Toronto police have sought the public's help to nab the accused, who has been at large since the incident. Indian Consulate expresses anguish
The Consulate General of India in Toronto expressed "deep anguish over the tragic death of the Indian student. In a statement on X, it said that it was providing necessary assistance to his family.
"We express deep anguish over the tragic death of a young Indian doctoral student, Mr Shivank Avasthi, in a fatal shooting incident near the University of Toronto Scarborough Campus," it said.
"The Consulate is in touch with the bereaved family during this difficult time, and is extending all necessary assistance in close coordination with the local authorities," it added.
Toronto murder
Last week, a 30-year-old Indian woman, Himanshi Khurana, was found dead at a residence in Toronto. Her partner, 32-year-old Abdul Ghafoori's role was suspected behind the alleged murder. The police issued a warran for Ghafoori an charged him with first degree murder. The woman and the suspect Gwere reportedly in an "intimate partner relationship".
The victim was identified as 20-year-old Shivank Avasthi.
