Series of attacks on Hindu community

Joy’s death comes amid a disturbing spate of violence against Hindus across Bangladesh. The recent incidents began following the death of radical anti-India figure Sharif Osman Hadi, who was preparing to contest the February 12 parliamentary elections.

In the past few weeks, several killings have been reported from different districts. A 27-year-old man, Dipu Chandra Das, was beaten to death in Mymensingh. On December 24, Amrit Mondal was lynched by a mob in Rajbari. In another incident in Mymensingh, 42-year-old Bajendra Biswas was shot dead by a colleague.

Elsewhere, 50-year-old Khokon Das was set ablaze in Shariatpur, journalist Rana Pratap Bairagi was shot dead in Jessore on January 5, and Sarat Mani Chakraborty, aged 40, was killed a day later in Narsingdi.

India voices concern

Reacting to the developments, India has strongly condemned the violence and urged Bangladesh’s interim administration to act decisively against attacks on minorities.

External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said the recurring incidents have intensified fear and insecurity among minority communities. He noted a “disturbing pattern” of extremist attacks on minorities, their homes and businesses, and expressed concern over attempts to downplay such crimes as personal or political disputes.
