'Appreciate goodwill gesture': Bangladesh Nationalist Party after PM Modi voices concern over Khaleda Zia’s health

Khaleda Zia, 80, has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. She has been admitted to the hospital since November 23 after she developed a severe chest infection that affected both her heart and lungs. Few days after her admission, her condition worsened significantly. She was later shifted to coronary care unit after her multiple health complications escalated and has since been placed on ventilation.

New Delhi: Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern about the health of former Bangladesh prime minister Begum Khaleda Zia, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Tuesday conveyed its “sincere gratitude" to him and lauded him for the "gesture of goodwill".

Responding to PM Modi's remarks, wishing her a quick recovery, the BNP in a post on X said it "deeply appreciates this gesture of goodwill and the expression of readiness to extend support".

In a post on social media, the Prime Minister had earlier said he was “deeply concerned to learn about the health of Begum Khaleda Zia, who has contributed to Bangladesh’s public life for many years," and extended “sincere prayers and best wishes for her speedy recovery." He further stated that “India stands ready to extend all possible support, in whatever way we can".

Khaleda Zia, 80, has been undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Dhaka. Zia, who is the chairperson of BNP, has been admitted to the hospital since November 23 after she developed a severe chest infection that affected both her heart and lungs. A few days after her admission, her condition worsened significantly. She was later shifted to the coronary care unit after her multiple health complications escalated and has since been placed on ventilation.

BNP Vice-Chairman Advocate Ahmed Aazam Khan said her health status is extremely grave, and that there is "nothing more to do except seek prayers from the whole nation."

Zia has been suffering from multiple health issues, including complications related to her liver and kidneys, as well as diabetes, arthritis, and chronic eye ailments.
