New Delhi: Days after Dipu Chandra Das, a Hindu factory worker, was lynched and his body set on fire, another Hindu man has been beaten to death in Bangladesh, raising concerns over mob violence and communal attacks in strife-torn country.
The victim has been identified as 29-year-old Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat. He was killed in the Pangsha sub-district of Rajbari, according to local media reports.
Police said local residents accused Mondal of extortion, following which the incident escalated into mob violence. Police records list Mondal as the leader of a local gang named Samrat Bahini.
Last week, a mob in Mymensingh city beat to death 28-year-old Dipu Chandra Das over allegations of blasphemy. The killing triggered protests across the country. Interim government chief Muhammad Yunus said the government would take responsibility for the victim's wife, young child and parents. Police have so far arrested 12 people in the case.
In a separate incident on Tuesday, the house of a Hindu family was set on fire in the Raozan area near Chattogram. Within five days, homes belonging to seven Hindu families have been torched in the area. Police said five suspects have been arrested in connection with the arson attacks.
The spate of killings and arson has created an atmosphere of fear across Bangladesh. On December 12, Inqilab Manch leader Sharif Usman Hadi was shot in Dhaka and later died during treatment in Singapore. On the same evening, mobs set fire to the offices of the Daily Star and Prothom Alo, and also torched premises of cultural organisations Chhayanaut and Udichi Shilpi Gosthi.
In a statement, Yunus's office said violence cannot be justified on the basis of allegations or rumours. Bangladesh is scheduled to go to the polls in February 2026.
