Fresh concerns over minority safety in Bangladesh have emerged following a brutal attack on a Hindu businessman in Shariatpur. On 31 December, Khokon Chandra Das, a 50-year-old owner of a medicine store, was attacked by a mob while returning home. He was assaulted with sharp weapons, doused with petrol, and set on fire. Gravely injured, Mr Das escaped by jumping into a pond and was later rescued by locals, eventually being shifted to Dhaka for treatment.

This incident is particularly alarming as it marks the fourth targeted assault on Hindus in Bangladesh within a mere fifteen days. Authorities have identified two suspects in the attack on Mr Das, with investigations underway to ascertain the motive.

In a separate development, a 35-year-old lawyer, Naeem Kibria, was beaten to death in Dhakas Basundhara residential area following an alleged road rage altercation. Police have confirmed the death and initiated an investigation. These incidents collectively underscore significant law and order challenges currently facing Bangladesh.
