New Delhi: Bangladesh ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's son extended gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Indian government for "saving his mother's life". Sajeeb Wazed said that his mother would have been killed if she had not left Bangladesh.
Massive violent protests in Bangladesh on August 5 last year forced Hasina to flee the country and take refuge in India. She has been living in India since she was deposed as prime minister of Bangladesh.
Speaking to news agency ANI in Virginia, Wazed said, "India has always been a good friend. In the crisis, India has essentially saved my mother's life. If she hadn't left Bangladesh, the militants had planned on killing her. So, I am eternally grateful to Prime Minister Modi's government for saving my mother's life."
Death sentence to Hasina
Wazeed's remarks come days after a special tribunal in Bangladesh sentenced Hasina to death for “crimes against humanity” over her government’s crackdown on student-led protests last year. Following the verdict, Hasina, in a statement, said she was not afraid to face her “accusers” in a proper tribunal where the evidence can be weighed and tested fairly.
What Wazed said on Hasina's extradition
Asked about Hasina's extradition, her son said, "For an extradition to happen, the judicial process has to be followed. In Bangladesh, there is a government that's unelected, unconstitutional and illegal. In order to convict my mother, they amended laws to fast-track her trial... So these laws were amended illegally."
India on Monday said it noted the verdict and that it will engage constructively with all stakeholders, considering peace, democracy and stability in the neighbouring country.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh.
