Hindu man burnt alive in Bangladesh, family calls it ‘planned murder’

Dhaka: In a shocking incident, a 25-year-old Hindu man, Chanchal Chandra Bhowmik, was burnt alive in Bangladesh's Narsingdi last Friday. The incident took place while he was sleeping in his shop. He was working in a garage for last six years.
Victim was sole breadwinner of the family
Bhowmik was the sole breadwinner of his family. After his father’s death, he was taking care of his ailing mother, disabled elder brother and younger brother. Neighbours described him as a simple man with no known enemies. According to reports, Bhowmik was killed after the shop was shut from the outside, petrol was poured and it was burnt down.
Latest on spade of attacks on Hindus
Bhowmik's killing is the latest on the spade of attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh. In recent time there have been reports of several attacks on Hindus, which led to deaths in several cases. In recent times, the attacks on Hindus surged again after the killing of Sharif Osman Hadi, a student leader, who play important role in protests against the Sheikh Hasina Government in 2024. Hasina was forced to leave the country subsequently.
What led to surge in recent attacks?
Hadi was attacked in Dhaka recently. After initial treatment in the country, he was subsequently shifted to Singapore, where he succumbed to injuries. His death led to massive anti-India protests and attacks on Hindus were also increased. In recent times, several Hindus like Dipu Chandra Das and Khokon Chandra Das were killed in Bangladesh, resulting in fear among minorities in the country.
Khokon, a businessman. was killed last year, after he was attacked and set on fire by a mob in Shariatpur district of the country. On the other hand, Dipu who owned a small medicine shop, was killed after he was stabbed, beaten and doused with petrol while returning home.
