ICE shootout in Minnesota: Trump accuses state leaders of inciting insurrection | What we know so far

New Delhi: As tensions escalate in the US following the shooting of a man by federal agents during an immigration enforcement operation in Minneapolis, President Donald Trump accused Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey of "inciting insurrection” after the incident.

Trump alleged that the two Democrats were spreading "pompous, dangerous and arrogant rhetoric” instead of investigating what he claimed were "millions of dollars stolen from Minnesota.”

In a hard-hitting post on Truth Social, Trump questioned Minnesota authorities over the absence of local police officers during the operation, asking why no officers were deployed to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) personnel. He further alleged that police had been prevented from carrying out their duties.

On Saturday, Trump shared another post on Truth Social, directly calling out the Governor and the Mayor. He wrote, "This is the gunman’s gun, loaded (with two additional full magazines!), and ready to go — what is that all about? Where are the local Police? Why weren’t they allowed to protect ICE Officers? The Mayor and the Governor called them off.”

Furthering his remarks, Trump described ICE officers as "patriots” and urged the public to allow them to carry out their duties. He also claimed that those who allegedly stole money from the people of Minnesota should be jailed. Trump said that 12,000 "illegal alien criminals” had been arrested and removed from the state, labelling them "fraudsters” and calling the situation a "really big bank robbery.” According to Trump, the attack on federal agents was a cover-up for the alleged theft.

Reacting to Trump’s incendiary post, Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, a Democrat, condemned the ICE operations and demanded an immediate halt.

"This is sickening. The President must end this operation. Pull the thousands of violent, untrained officers out of Minnesota. Now,” Walz wrote on X.

Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the man who was shot was an American citizen and a lawful gun owner with a valid permit to carry. He confirmed that multiple federal officers were involved in the shooting.

The incident has further intensified tensions between state officials and the Trump administration as federal immigration enforcement expands in Minnesota, drawing sharp criticism from local leaders and renewed political backlash from the White House.
