Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli Resigns Amidst Violent Protests
Nepal is grappling with a major political crisis following the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli. His departure comes in the wake of widespread and violent anti-corruption protests, triggered by a controversial government-imposed ban on social media platforms on September 5th. The protests, initially led by young people, quickly escalated into a nationwide movement, resulting in nineteen deaths and hundreds of injuries.
Demonstrators stormed government buildings, including Parliament, and attacked the homes of top officials. Several ministers resigned, and PM Oli fled Kathmandu by military helicopter.
The shutdown of Tribhuvan International Airport has stranded hundreds of Indian passengers. While social media has since been restored, the situation remains volatile, with the army deployed to maintain order. The instability has created a power vacuum, raising questions about Nepal's future political leadership and its stability.
