New Delhi: China has called upon regional powers in Asia to enhance its anti-terrorism operation and enhance cooperation on the matter. The appeal by the country's foreign ministry came after the US designated The Resistance Front, a proxy of Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Tayyiba (LeT), as a foreign terrorist organisation for its involvement in the Pahalgam terror attack.

Statement of China's Foreign Ministry

Foreign Ministry spokesperson of China, Lin Jian said, "China firmly opposes all forms of terrorism and strongly condemns the terrorist attack that occurred on April 22." He was reacting to a question from the media about China's stand on the US State Department designating TRF as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation.

Jian added, "China calls upon regional countries to enhance counterterrorism cooperation and jointly maintain regional security and stability."

NDTV reported that the guarded response from China came just hours after the US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in a statement informed that the US State DEpartment was designating the TRF as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation and also a Specially Designated Global Terrorist Group.

Expected reactions on US move

The move of the US to designate the TRF as a Foreign Terrorist Organisation is expected to be discussed in the United Nations. The United Nations Security Council's 1267 Committee, which designates terrorists and their organisations, is expected to take up the matter at its next meeting.

In the past Pakistani terrorist groups and individuals have been listed under the UN Security Council's 1267 sanctions regime. Some of the terror outfits which have been sanctioned by the Security Council are LeT, Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM), and Jamaat-ud-Dawa (JuD). Apart from this, individuals like Hafiz Saeed and Masood Azhar are designated as terrorists.

After the Pahalgam attack on April 22, the UNSC issued a strong statement condemning the attack. But the statement reportedly dropped references to TRF and LeT following objections from Pakistan and China.

The heinous attack on April 22, in Jammu and Kashmir's Pahalgam left 26 people dead. The TRF initially claimed responsibility for the attack, but after tensions escalated between India and Pakistan, they backtracked.
